About CASMR

The Canadian Association of Small Modular Reactors (CASMR) is a non-profit organization dedicated to advocating and promoting SMRs as a transformative wave of nuclear energy innovation that meets Canada’s environmental, economic, and social objectives. Our mission is to accelerate the development and deployment of SMRs to fulfill Canada’s net-zero ambitions.

We are committed to promoting a comprehensive understanding of SMR technology among the public, industry, and policymakers, while advocating for regulatory reforms and financial incentives that support SMR development.

We aim to enhance Canada’s competitiveness in the nuclear sector, boost confidence in nuclear energy, and actively engage with Indigenous communities. Our focus encompasses industry collaboration in R&D, setting high safety standards, developing SMR supply chains, and cultivating both domestic and international markets.

CASMR is dedicated to transparently addressing concerns about safety, waste management, and decommissioning, ensuring that SMR growth aligns with the interests of all stakeholders.

Our Vision

CASMR believes in a future where Small Modular Reactors are integral to Canada’s transition to a sustainable, net-zero energy landscape. We see SMRs, with their flexibility and reduced footprint, as symbols of innovation, safety, and reliability, boosting Canada’s competitive edge in the global nuclear industry.

We work to build widespread confidence in nuclear energy by upholding the highest standards and fostering open dialogue, particularly with Indigenous communities.

Our goal is to see SMRs recognized not only as a solution to diverse energy challenges but also as catalysts for economic growth and environmental stewardship. Through continuous education, robust standards, and collaborative market development, we aspire to establish SMRs as a trusted, adaptable energy source, significantly contributing to global and regional net-zero objectives.

Our Approach

Our firm belief in the transformative potential of Small Modular Reactors (SMRs) drives our focus on accelerating a sustainable energy future for Canada. Recognizing the value of established nuclear associations, CASMR complements the broader industry by creating a dedicated SMR network.

We champion SMR-specific needs in policy reform, public awareness, and market development, maximizing their unique technological advantages. CASMR fosters ongoing partnerships within the nuclear sector, working towards a robust and comprehensive Canadian nuclear landscape.

Our Program

CASMR’s activities are structured around five foundational pillars: Indigenous Partnership, Public Education, Focus on Western Canada, SMR-Focused Regulatory Process, and SMR Hub and Workforce. Each pillar is a core focus area supporting our mission and strategic objectives.

Leading Together: CASMR values and prioritizes meaningful partnerships with Indigenous Peoples as essential to unlocking Canada’s SMR potential.
CASMR is committed to growing in partnership with Indigenous communities in Canada. Consequently, we have reserved the position of President specifically for a prominent figure from the Indigenous communities in Western Canada.
CASMR advocates for proactive engagement and collaboration between the industry and Indigenous communities to develop and deploy SMRs throughout Canada.

Efficient Regulation: CASMR advocates for a regulatory framework specifically designed for Small Modular Reactors, emphasizing a tailored approach that enhances efficiency.
We propose regulatory refinements based on a graded, risk-informed criteria to ensure regulations are appropriately aligned with the unique attributes and safety profiles of SMRs. This approach aims to streamline processes, promote innovation within the sector, and contribute effectively to meeting Canada’s net-zero goals.

Provincial Support: CASMR advocates for provincial backing to help the SMR industry acquire, maintain, and enhance the skills needed to benefit from the emerging global SMR value chains.
We will work closely with all levels of government in Canada to foster an environment that provides a clear path for SMR deployment, especially in Western Canada.
We believe that investment from all levels of government is crucial to building confidence in the private sector and unlocking investment opportunities in SMR technologies.

CASMR will lead public education efforts about the benefits and opportunities of SMRs in Western Canada. In a region unfamiliar with nuclear energy, we aim to become the voice of the SMR industry, reaching out to raise awareness among the public, inform and educate about new, small, modular, and safe nuclear technologies.
We intend to collaborate with all government levels and Indigenous communities in Western Canada to launch campaigns that educate the public about SMRs and their role in achieving Canada’s net-zero goals.

Industry Collaboration and Supply Chain: CASMR will function as an SMR Hub, facilitating a collaborative space where industry stakeholders can share insights and accelerate the development and deployment of SMRs in Canada.
We will serve as a center of excellence, gathering and disseminating comprehensive information about SMRs and industry actors across Canada. This initiative will position Canada’s supply chain to lead in the of global value chains for SMRs.
SMR Workforce: In cooperation with federal and provincial governments in Western Canada, CASMR plans to establish a micro-credentials program for SMRs, aimed at building the future workforce in the SMR industry. This initiative will particularly support Indigenous communities in Western Canada, boosting their capacity to engage and collaborate in the SMR industry.
To meet these objectives for the SMR Hub and workforce, CASMR will facilitate knowledge
